Mentoring program spring semester 2018
1. Before leaving: Introduction session
The introduction session will acquaint interested students with the mentoring program. Please write to the project coordinator if you would like to come.
This event will take place on October 18, 2017, 12.30 to 13.30 (room 331, Main Building, Hochschulstrasse 4, 3012 Bern).
2. Before leaving: Workshop - First steps in intercultural learning
The mentoring program MILSA will continue with an intercultural learning workshop with a group of 15 University of Bern students who are going to study abroad in the 2018 spring semester. MILSA Participants will form peer groups (with local University of Bern students) of three to four people. This session aims to acquaint students with the topic of intercultural learning and study abroad. The workshop, which is organised in cooperation with the Welcome Center, is also open to local and international students interested in the topic of intercultural learning.
The intercultural learning workshop (pre-departure session) will take place on November 24, 2017 09.30 to 15.00 (room B-105, UniS, Schanzenstrasse 1, 3012 Bern)
3. When away: During study abroad
During their stay abroad, the mentees (the participants) stay in contact with their peer groups and with the mentor by communicating via the ILIAS learning platform “MILSA 2018”. The mentees will talk to the mentor at least once per semester, contribute actively to a shared blog, and work on an intercultural communication project with their peers (University of Bern students who are also abroad). This period of the mentoring program is dedicated to supporting students during their stay abroad with the possibility reading, writing, sharing and contributing experiences with the help on the online platform and in conversation with the mentor.
4. Coming home: Post-sojourn session
In September 2018 (date tba), we will meet for a post-sojourn session to discuss coming back home and the return to routine here. Importantly, mentees and mentor will dedicate time to elaborating how the study abroad experience is relevant in terms of both personal as well as future professional life. Coming home is just as important as leaving in terms of study abroad, and supporting students in this is central to their study abroad experience.
5. Online survey
In Autumn 2018, mentees will be asked to fill in an online survey about their study abroad and their experiences.
6. Confirmation of Participation and Certificate of Completion
Once you have filled in the online survey, you will receive your personal Confirmation of Participation in the MILSA program and your Certificate of Completion. The Confirmation is a letter which lists all the skills that you have practised and learned with MILSA and confirms your active participation in the programme. The Certificate indicates that you have completed the MILSA program. Both are useful for adding to your CV.
Please note that your peers are University of Bern students, not students from your host university.
